Action to Empower Communities

ACTION for Conflict Transformation is a global network that grew out of a 'Core Group' of 30 people who came together at the invitation of Responding to Conflict (RTC), a UK-based INGO working for conflict transformation in March 2000. ACTION is made up of people who are actively engaged in the practice of and training on conflict transformation and peacebuilding. ACTION's membership has continued to grow to more than 60 people who are working in communities and organisations around the world towards the following goals:

  • building capacity to transform conflicts
  • empowering communities to take action, and
  • facilitating linkages and learning between practitioners

Building Capacity to Transform Conflicts

ACTION's central philosophy is called "Conflict Transformation". This is a holistic and multifaceted process of engaging with conflict. It aims to reduce violence and to protect and promote social justice and sustainable peace. It requires work in all spheres, at all levels and with all stakeholders.
Conflict Transformation needs to be accountable to those directly affected by conflict but requires networks and linkages to sustain it. Conflict Transformation is an ongoing process of changing relationships, behaviours, attitudes and structures, from the negative to the positive. It requires timely interventions, respect for cultural context, patience and persistence and a comprehensive understanding of the conflict.

As conflict is dynamic and Conflict Transformation is an ongoing process, learning is a vital component.

Linking and Learning: Developing Networks

In an increasingly globalised world, there is a need to think and act globally, while building upon experience that is grounded in local action and wisdom. ACTION provides a structure and a mechanism for members to make this link between the local and the global in what we think and in what we do.
Through our regular meetings, courses and communication, members from different countries have the opportunity to share ideas and learn new skills for handling conflict situations in our home countries. Furthermore, through interaction and group analysis of the rapidly changing global context, we are able to recognize the affect that the global powers have on each and every community, nation and region.
By being linked to others struggling with similar conflict situations across the world, we gain renewed understanding, strength and solidarity. We also see more clearly the importance of being involved with and supporting global actions, of empowering people at the local level to have their voices heard, and of mobilising
together for the good of the whole planet that we share.
